In a world where artificial intelligence is the talk of the day, and in a field where professionals increasingly rely on translation software (as is sometimes sadly obvious) I chose the other side. Call me outdated, call me<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>old school<\/span><\/i>, call me what you like but the fact is that today there is no software, application or technology capable of besting the skill of a native translator.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>I believe anyone who commissions a translation<\/strong>\u00a0expects it to be done 100% by a real person, a translator in the flesh<\/strong><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

That is what I am and what I do. I have decided to make my being a non-artificial translator<\/strong> my main strength. In addition, translating comes as naturally to me as breathing: I was born and raised in Italy where I grew up until the age f 12, then I moved to Japan where I continued my education in<\/span>\u00a0English-speaking schools.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Back in Europe, I got my Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media Studies in 2004. My friends say that I am\u00a0\u201c<\/span>bilingual at heart<\/span><\/i>\u201d or \u201c<\/span>mother- and father- tongue<\/span><\/i>\u201d, which always makes me smile.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

How did I come to be a natural translator?<\/h2>\n<\/div>

I didn’t start out my career as a translator, at least not officially. Fresh out of university I started working for a press office<\/strong> with clients across Europe; then I moved to an <\/span>international communication agency <\/b>and, finally, to the <\/span>marketing department <\/b>of a multinational company specializing in market research<\/b>. Can you guess what most of the work I was asked to do was? That’s right, translation<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After 6 years as an employee and hundreds of translations<\/strong> done for various colleagues and bosses (<\/span>\u201cbecause you’re just so good at it<\/em><\/span>\u201d), in 2010 I decided to turn my life around. The obvious choice for a new career was to do what I am best at doing, so I became an independent translator<\/strong>. I decided against working for a translation agency<\/strong>\u00a0because I don’t like the standardized work process and obsession with optimizing time<\/strong> an agency would have required. Since then my professional baggage has come to include tens of thousands of translations. The term transcreation (literally \u201ccreative translation\u201d) refers to the process of adapting a message into another language while preserving the same intention, style, tone and context<\/strong>. When I am asked to define transcreation I say, \u201cIf translation and copywriting had a child, it would be transcreation<\/em>\u201d. This topic is of great current interest as multinationals, as well as many local companies, often use English in their promotional and advertising material in order to standardize their communication. However, standardization comes at a cost. While this kind of content is intended to attract and retain interest, when it speaks a different language than the audience\u2019s own it risks being only partially understood or completely misunderstood, or even losing much of its strength and impact. In these cases, translation is not the solution.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of transcreation is to render puns, irony, set phrases and cultural concepts from one language into another. This is especially helpful, even necessary, with content of a highly creative or emotional nature. Most notable examples include slogans, payoffs and advertising copy. When working on this kind of content the first question I ask myself is, \u201cWhat is the key message<\/em> that needs to get to the audience? What words can effectively convey the essence of this message?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> Using language in a creative way has always attracted me, and for this reason I decided to specialize in transcreation. I find the challenge of hunting out just the right word or expression to convey an idea or meaning very stimulating.
